The generative AI traffic race is tightening. According to fresh data from Similarweb covering the 12 months through February 2026, ChatGPT still commands the largest share of global GenAI website traffic, but its lead is shrinking fast, while Gemini is making a serious run at the top.
From 75% to 61%: ChatGPT's Shrinking Dominance
A year ago, ChatGPT sat at 75.7% of total generative AI traffic, while Google's Gemini held just 5.7% and DeepSeek accounted for 8.5%. Six months later, ChatGPT slipped to 74.0%, but Gemini had already jumped to 13.3%, reflecting accelerating adoption of Google's AI ecosystem.
By February 2026, the gap narrowed sharply: ChatGPT dropped to 61.7% while Gemini climbed to 24.4%, approaching one quarter of the global market.
Claude Crosses 3% as Grok and Claude Overtake DeepSeek
The reshuffle extends beyond the top two. Grok and Claude have both surpassed DeepSeek, moving into third and fourth place in the global traffic rankings. Notably, Claude crossed the 3% traffic share threshold for the first time in February 2026, a milestone reflecting growing adoption of Anthropic's models. According to recent subscription data, Gemini and Claude together hit 258% growth, signaling that this traffic momentum is backed by real user commitment. Platforms like Perplexity and Copilot maintain smaller but stable slices of the market.
The broader picture confirms what industry watchers have suspected: generative AI is no longer a one-platform game. While ChatGPT retains clear dominance, Gemini now leads AI conversion rates at 68%, outperforming rivals on turning visitors into active users. As competition intensifies across traffic, subscriptions, and engagement, the question is no longer whether ChatGPT can be challenged, but how quickly the gap will close.
