Microsoft has rolled out "Teams Mode" for its Copilot assistant, transforming it from a personal tool into a shared collaborator that participates in group conversations within Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared the news, explaining that "Teams Mode lets groups co-create with Copilot in a Teams chat," alongside a demo showing the AI summarizing discussions and generating project updates.
Previously functioning as a one-on-one assistant, Copilot can now be invited into shared channels where it assists entire teams simultaneously.
What Teams Mode Offers
Teams Mode comes with several practical features:
- Co-creation in chats: Teams can brainstorm, draft documents, or map out projects with Copilot contributing in real time
- Smart summarization: The AI recaps conversations, surfaces key decisions, and organizes action items
- Permission-based security: Copilot only accesses information that all participants are authorized to see
By embedding AI directly into Teams, Microsoft is positioning itself at the forefront of AI-driven workplace tools, making Copilot central to how work gets done.
Rethinking Collaboration
This update reflects a broader industry shift: AI is moving from personal assistant to collaborative partner. Picture a product launch meeting where Copilot drafts the brief, gathers feedback, and assigns tasks—all in one chat. That's the seamless support Microsoft envisions, though success will depend on proper training, governance, and trust.
